| The Rock Lodge was built by the
Breadalbanes as a home for the Chinese concubine of Lord Breadalbane. It is a
listed category B building with a 19th century 'Gothic' circular tower with
rustic masonry. Many places around Taymouth Castle
have a Chinese flavour. The Chinese Bridge was
built so that his Lordship did not have to travel all the way into the village
to visit Rock Lodge (it must have been a regular occurrence!). There were also
Chinese gardens, and the ball room in the Castle is called the Chinese room
because of the silk tapestries and paintings on the ceilings. Rock Lodge is now
only a remnant, and is looked after by the Forestry Commission. It must have
been a damp, dank place to live as many springs emerge from
Drummond Hill above it. |
